You say that you’re not photogenic, but I think that you might be.

Noisy Sins of the Insect

Noisy Sins was a pretty short lived screamo band from Istanbul, Turkey. Their music is heavily influenced by the European scene, but I feel as if they really reflect the sound of Funeral Diner and Spirit of Versailles. The songs are fast and abrasive yet leave room for plenty of atmosphere and melody. The only thing about this band I’m not too big a fan of is all the Donnie Darko samples, but I’d say they should be on the list of “essential screamo bands”.

The Gerbils - Are You Sleepy

With summer just around the bend, many of us are undoubtedly trading in our melancholy heart break songs for more upbeat fun stuff. The Gerbils end up somewhere between the two, helped by their curious lyrics and lofi recordings. This balance will be familiar to anyone who’s listened to Neutral Milk Hotel before, which lets face it, is just about everyone. The Gerbils hailed from the (arguably) glorious years following 1992 and were part of The Elephant Six Collective, making the NMH comparisons all the more relevant. Anyways, the majority of the songs are relatively simple, playing to the bands strengths of being able to write a lot of really catchy songs. Depth is further provided through the lyrics which shine with their own brand of cheerful morbidness. Yes, I know that that is a paradox of sorts, but I feel it’s correct none the less. Lines like “My cup is full of arachnids/They crawl all over your house” are followed by “Your sunshine soul, it sings to me/Your sunshine soul, like some melody.” It creates an interesting dynamic. This has been sitting in my drafts for a while now so I’m just going to end it here.

Henry Bemis is a Superhero - I’ve Been Asleep
hey, this is a new album from my lofi acoustic project (what a tool) that has garnered its niche of fans that will probably all already know about it and like it but maybe if you follow me and appreciate some of my other work, you will like this as well? check it out, and if you feel so inclined check all the other EPs out. but probably just the self titled and going for the gold because they’re the only good ones. i’ll probably write a big long monologue tonight about this and other hbias releases. thanks for listening and reading!

Dry River String - Buried EP

Wow, so this rules. Dry River String, from what I can tell, are a three piece folk band from Japan. One of the members does guest vocals on some toe. songs which is cool because these guys are definitely going to draw some comparisons to toe. However, while toe. can really jam the fuck out sometimes, these guys (and girl!) are much more subdued. Each song on this ep is super relaxing and laid back. The vocals are in english, and though the accent is definitely noticeable, it makes the tracks all that more endearing. Not really sure what else to say about them. The art rules, the lyrics are good, there’s some synth here and there, and the first song (An Able Politician Saves Oil) has a killer name, as well as music video. This EP came out in 2009, and I can’t seem to find any other releases from them. I really hope they’re still writing as I would eat up anything they put out.

Perfect Future’s album is up for streaming on ATP! Be sure to check this out and pre-order it.

Their sound is a combination of 90’s emo, twinkly, dark hardcore, and punk. As you can imagine this creates an original sound.

editors note: WHAT JORDAN FAILS TO MENTION IS THAT THIS IS A CONCEPT ALBUM ABOUT WWI

letter to the editor: DO YOU THINK OUR READERS ARE DUMB ENOUGH TO NOT TELL JUST FROM THE TITLE?
